Lucifer Cap

"I have used the cap whilst fishing at night for Sea Trout, and the first thing that becomes apparent is the option to have at your disposal the benefit of light without the usual problem of fitting an elasticated light (however small) underneath the peak of your cap comfortably. As you would be wearing a cap anyway, especially where biting midges are present, it is a great advantage to have the necessary light required already built into your cap.

This also allows you to adjust the direction of the beam with a simple tilt of the caps peak as apposed to adjusting your head when wearing a fixed head lamp. The beam produced by the lamp offers an ample concentrated light for tying on flies and tying knots etc whilst at the same time not being too widespread and lighting up the river bank. Another great plus and one I like very much, is the simple switch located just to the right of the cap's peak which allows you to activate the light with a simple click instead of fiddling about trying to find a sliding switch which is common with several of the head lamps now on the market."

I have been using the Lucifer Cap for the past month during my overnight carp fishing sessions. I have used various products over the past few years including head torches of various brands and sizes, clip on lights, all of which tended to be rather fiddly to operate and locate under the cover of darkness.

The built in LED's of the Lucifer Cap meant that I only had to put on the cap and press the small switch on the side of the cap to switch the light either on or off as required – easy!

The two powerful white LED's are sensibly housed in the peak of the cap, which means that the LED's are angled perfectly for close up night time rig-tying, playing, landing and unhooking of fish and I have also used the cap whilst boating rigs out to a spot.

The Lucifer cap is available in a variety of colours, camo being my personal favourite together with the possibility of different colour LED's - white, red, yellow, green, blue and purple. As the autumn approaches I am looking forward to testing the fleece version of the cap with its snug ear warmers!

This product does exactly what it was designed for. In short put the cap on, press the switch and off you go!

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

To start with it's a decent cap, not just some cheap thing with all the cost gone into the lights.

It's comfortable and the small, flat batteries are not an issue when wearing it. They weigh next to nothing and you can't feel them: the cap feels just like a conventional baseball cap.

The light from the two LED's is more than adequate for baiting the hook and seeing around your swim. It's adequate for walking off in the dark.

The wiring is hidden and unobtrusive and the push-button on/off switch small but easy to use.

You need to pull the cap down to just above your eyebrows when looking down to tie a hook or bait up, but that is not a problem.

I smiled when I first saw it, thinking it was yet another gimmick. But no, I've worn it quite a few times now when fishing into darkness and I can honestly say I like it - a lot. And the price is excellent considering you can pay more than £11.99 for a decent cap without any lights!

I haven't tried the winter version yet, but you can be sure I will. Check back here for a full report.

"As a professional angler who has to cope with after-dark fishing on a regular basis, I was intrigued by the concept of combined cap and torch. My first impressions were that it would be useful from a sporting perspective only. I now realise that it has thousands of uses outside its sporting role. Visits to the loft, getting the coal in, searching for small, dropped items on the carpet have all seen the cap being utilised since I acquired one. The Lucifer Cap is a must for all countrymen who require hands-free illumination for after-dark work. Even townsfolk will welcome such a device for such operations as rummaging in unlit storage facilities, coping with power failures, making oneself visible to motorists whilst on evening walks – wherever a torch is useful, the cap is essential".

It's a great idea if you fish in the evening or at night. No more fumbling around for a torch: you just press the switch on the cap, and you can net fish (or sort out tangles) with both hands free.

"I think the Lucifer Cap has some excellent features and will be indispensable for my future night fishing expeditions.  Firstly there is the comfort factor. The cap is as comfortable to wear as any other baseball type cap but has a great, useable light built in to the fabric at your fingertips. This is a major improvement on the headband type light. Secondly there is the ease of use. The switch on the right hand side of the cap is easily activated with one finger and this becomes really important when you are grappling with a fish ! The beam is ideal for the purpose.... focussed on a tight area giving a useable beam without flooding the riverbank. I will have no hesitation in recommending the Lucifer Cap to my friends, colleagues and clients for anyone contemplating night fishing".
